Q: Do you need to use TOYOTA BRAKE PARTS in a TACOMA?
OR do aftermarket ( good quality) works as well? I get conflicting answers depending on who I ask. Theres a HUGE $$ difference !

A: You are probably refering to rotors and pads when you say brake parts but i'm not sure. You do not have to use Toyota brand parts when replacing these items. The pads you can acquire from your local parts dealer will do the same job and sometimes even better. The parts from your local parts store are required to meet or exceed OEM (original equipment manufacturer) specifications. There are different types of pads though. Semi-metallic, organic, metallic, and a few others. The organic is usually cheapest and wears out faster but the generally do not cause as much damage to the rotors therefore the rotors do not have to be replaced as often but the pads have to be replaced more often. The other tend to last longer but cause increasingly more damage to the rotors so they have to be replaced more often and so on. There are some that do not cause as much dust on your wheels, which would be called ceramic pads. There are several different types but all have to meet oem specifications and all have different high and low points to them. Yes, unless it is under factory warranty, the parts from your parts store will do fine

Q: What could cause the rear seal on my Toyota Tacoma's axle (same side) to go twice within a month?
I have a 2003 standard transmission Toyota Tacoma 2 WD truck. For a little while I had noticed a buildup of grease on the inside of my driver's side rear wheel and a burning oil smell. I called my local mechanic who just does tuneups, brakes + small stuff and he told me that it sounded like the rear seal and he recommended someone to go to. My wife and I had gone to this other person before and are happy with his work. Well 3 weeks ago today, I brought it in and had the rear seal and the bearings replaced for a little over $300.00. Checking around that is a fair price since there was 2.5 hours of labor. Well this past Friday I smelled that burning oil smell again for the first time since the problem was fixed. There was fresh grease on the wheel. I just got off of the phone with the guy who did the work and I am bringing it in tomorrow morning. Here is the question; Could it just be a faulty part (it is a genuine Toyota part) or could it be something else that is a bigger?

A: Yes it could be a faulty seal. Another reason it might have started leaking again is actually common. If the mechanic was doing the work on the floor and using a floor jack to raise the back end of the truck off the floor to do the repairs and filled the axle that way it is easy to overfill. If the axle has been overfilled it will eventually leak out one or more of the seals. Another thing it could be is if your rear shoes were not replaced they could be soaked with lube. This could take a while to work its way out of the brake shoes but I don't really think this is it because you did not smell the burning for three weeks. Hope I have been helpful.

Q: Toyota Tacoma Prerunner or Nissan Frontier Desert-Runner?
I'm looking at two different trucks. The Nissan has the Supercharged V6, leather, sunroof and the works. It seems like a really sporty truck. An 01 to 03' The other is an 01 to 03 Toyota Tacoma. This seems more of a sturdy truck and very reliable. Just plain cloth interior, more roomy inside and seems to be all around better built. My plan with the truck is to drive it daily and starting soon, using it for my new part-time lawn care company this fall. Both have big beds and the V6 and extended/quad cabs. The Nissan has more power, nicer interior and drives pretty nice. The Toyota is bigger, both inside and outside. I've owned both Nissan and Toyotas so I know both will get over 200k miles. What do you think?

A: In 1996, I owned a 1993 Toyota 4 wheel drive pick-up ( what would later be called the Tacoma ). It was a tough truck with a V-6, 5 speed trans and plenty of power. In 2001, in an impulse buy, I traded that truck on a 2001 Tacoma and, while it had more power and a smoother ride than my 1993, it lacked in ruggedness. In my opinion, it was a CAR with a pick-up truck bed on it. The "velour" interior and aluminum-foil skin was too "sissyfied" to be a truck. The suspension was weak and the truck "rolled" on the suspension in the slightest of curves. I HATED the 2001 Tacoma after owning it for less than a week and learned to hate it even more until the day I sold it a little more than a year later. In 2005, After owning a Jeep since selling my '01 Tacoma, I wanted a truck again. Toyota trucks were still too "stylish" ( obviously trying to market themselves to Yuppies or ladies, as "grocery getters" or to be used as "trash haulers" only ). I was never really impressed with the Ford Ranger, Chevy S-10, or Mazda mid-size pick-ups and, I didn't need or want a full-size pick-up. That's when I went to Nissan and saw the redesigned 2005 Nissan Frontier 4 wheel drive. The styling was remeniscent of the "hard body" styling and well equipped with a rugged interior and box. I test drove the truck and bought it the same day. The truck rides like a truck, with a comfortable but firm suspension. The 4.0 liter V-6 has plenty of power and the 6 speed trans ( unless you prefer an automatic ) is geared low enough to pull some heavy stuff from a dead stop and yet, cruise at 75 or 80 mph at roughly 2300 rpms. I've had alot of people ask about my '05 Nissan and I tell them the same as I'll tell you. Since my 1993 Toyota, this is the best truck I've ever owned and, if I knew then what I know now, I'd buy it again .... just as fast. *** Obviously, Rajan k only read what he wanted to read in my answer before making his interpretation of what I was explaining so, I will clairify for his ( and any other's, who may not understand ) benefit. The 1993 Toyota pick-up truck that I owned WAS a rugged truck and stood up wonderfully to the every-day use and abuse that I subjected it to. It WAS a great truck but, that was the 1993 model, NOT the newer models currently available which dent if you lean against them and the suspension sags if you put more than 2 shovel-fulls of gravel in the bed. The 2005 Frontier that I now have is built like a TRUCK. It rides like a truck, and handles, hauls and tows like a truck. If you want a plush car like ride and stylish, soft interior, get a Toyota. If you want a mid-size TRUCK to use for what a truck is designed to be used for, get the Nissan.

Q: My Toyota Tacoma is being recalled by Toyota. Are the Tacomas really just getting crushed?
They are awesome for the compensation for it but I would hope they would salvage some of the parts that were good. It seems like a waste to crush the truck when the engine and transmission is still good. They didn't put enough rust corrosion protection on the 95-2000 frames. In areas where they use salt on the roads the frames corrode quickly. They are doing free inspections on the frames. Some are fine, some they can fix, and the ones that aren't repairable they are paying 150% of book value.

A: Assuming its not repairable probably. Its anywhere from 8-13 years old. Toyota isn't in the junkyard business so I doubt they will want to pull and inspect parts to see whats still good and whats not. Seeing as how important the frame is they probably don't want a bad truck to end up back on the road and have someone try to sue them when it fails.

Q: I have a toyota tacoma, and it is leaking steering fluid, there is a hole in the metal fluid line?
What is this line called, I looked it up on the auto part stores but could only fine the rubber hose replacements.

A: It may be just a factory part, you'll have to get it at the dealership. Why not try a piece of slit rubber hose and a hose clamp to see if you can seal it up. Sheesh, I only meant to try and seal it for a temp fix, until you get your metal tube. Figured you didn't want fluid all over the place if you had to order it.

Q: My 96 Toyota Tacoma is pulsating on braking AGAIN !?
Ive had the rotors turned 2-3x now. Started after new pads put on last summer: brake shop says its me + Its Toyota: if that were the case-it would have warped/pulsated its first 80K of life ! Now -it ONLY pulsates on HIGH speed stops ONLY. Not ALL stops as last time. Theres room for one more turn. Should I just live with it? Replace pads and rotors? Is a little shimmy normal? Inspection recently (pre shimmy) showed calipers fine, even wear...disscoloration on rotor from heat. Enough room for 1 turn more if needed. Ideas? Is it ok to use good after market parts?? Toyota parts are $$$$$$$$$$$$$

A: check the rear brakes, too. My '98 Rodeo has such lousy rear brakes that if the e brake is applied when the vehicle is in motion at all the drums will warp. It's been this way since it was bought new. 80000 miles and I did all the brakes last fall, turned rotors and drums, bought good aftermarket pads and shoes and a few weeks later the drums are warped again, ugh! I may be done with the Rodeo, because it was smashed last week. Waiting for the estimate. Good luck with the toyota.

Q: Toyota tacoma versus Ford ranger?
i want to buy a small pick-up; which of these two are most economical to run- brake and other parts ect- and are both equal or not in terms of poss maintenance jobs that i can carry out?

A: the ford is better in every way.. it is cheaper to own and operate, more fun to drive and will out last the Toyota... and you won't be embarrassed when people see you in it...
