Q: will a 2002 toyota tacoma trd 3.4 liter engine fit in a 2002 toyota solara sle v6?
A: It is a bit more complicated than that. The 3.4 liter engine in the Tacoma is an in-line engine, meaning that when it sits in the engine bay, the cylinders are lined up in the same direction that the vehicle is pointed. This is the usual way that most rear or 4-wheel drive vehicles have their engines for the best "packaging" and transmission of power to the transmission and wheels.
The Solara uses a transverse engine configuration which is most common on front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive cars and vehicles. This gives better packaging and room for passengers along with the transmission in this type of vehicle.
What I'm trying to say is that given an unlimited amount of time, money and technical know-how, you can put any engine into any vehicle. However, in this case, it probably isn't practical with the amount of engineering required to do so.
Hope this helps.

Q: How do I diagnose problem with knocking in engine for 2002 Toyota Tacoma?
In January I rolled my 2002 Tacoma 2.4 4wd. It was upside down for about 2 hours. So oil leaked to the top of the engine all the way to the air filter. I cleaned most of it from the air intake. Besides body damage, there wasn't much damage to the engine. The only visible damage to the engine was radiator dented a little bit. When I go to start the truck, I have to use the clutch-cancel switch, pressing the clutch will not start. When I do get it started there is a knocking noise coming from where the front piston is. Although I'm not sure that the piston is actually the thing knocking, but the knocking does speed up when revving the engine. Thanks for any help.
A: First you should know the word "engine" and "knocking" means means something special (engine detonation).
I think you mean clicking type of noise. That is usually caused by lack of engine oil circulating. That would be (1) low oil (2) low oil pressure (3) blocked oil passages.
But given you car was flipped, it can also be many things (like engine and tranny being misaligned (with almost never happens in normal car life).
Good Luck...
Q: Can a 2002 Toyota Tacoma (with auto) be towed?
A: If towed any distance, the rear end must be disengaged from the transmission by some means. Towing a rear wheel drive vehicle on the ground with the driveshaft spinning the transmission will cause transmission failure, because the transmission is building heat and the pump is not working to run it through the external cooler in the front of the vehicle. Four wheel drive vehicles are generally easily disengaged; just put the transfer case in neutral and go. However, on two wheel drive vehicles, it can be a little more complicated. If flat towing or towing on the rear wheels are your only options, the driveshaft must be removed from the rearend, and tied up under the vehicle (if removed from the transmission also, all the fluid will be lost from the tranny). If you are going to be towing behind an RV, there are kits available which will disengage the driveshaft with the pull of a lever. If only being towed because of a breakdown, try to find a company with a rollback. This removes all the wheels from the ground and saves you a lot of headache.

Q: Day before yesterday my aibag warning lite came on in my 2002 Toyota Tacoma.?
I havent been in a wreck and the truck only has 34000 miles on it. I checked the fuse and its Ok and I even unhooked the battery for a few minutwes to reset the codes. Anyone have any ideas? Everything else works ok.
Unhooking the battery to reseat the codes didnt help. The light came right back on.
A: Erasing the codes is not a good idea because mechanic need to see the code to implement a repair plan. Next time the light gos on see Toyota I think you will find Air Bags have a Longer warranty. Crash sensor air bag control in the middle of the truck Two to 10 air bags seat belt pre-tensioners spiral cable behind the steering wheel all can fail and leave different codes. Toyota Dealer only Has the tool for Reading Air Bag codes. Great year make model and miles even Yea!
Q: New Brake Rotors for a 2002 Toyota Tacoma? Which brand is best?
Looking for new brake rotors on the net. My options are: Summit Extreme Performance cross-drilled/slotted surface for $49.95/1;
Power Stop Brake Rotors-Cross-drilled surface/vented/zinc plated for $99.95/1;
Power Stop Brake Rotors-Slotted/Solid surface/silver plated for $111.95/1.
Do the more expensive rotors last longer/perform much better over the cheaper rotors? Will I see a difference in slotted over vented over cross-drilled?
Thanks for you help.
A: Unless you have significantly increased the performance level of the truck, or you are going to be participating in competition level off-roading or racing, the stock rotors are the way to go.
But if you are looking to upgrade your braking system........
Cross drilling and slots on the rotors serve to vent the gases and heat that occurs under heavy braking..... and, by venting the heat and gases you lessen the amount of heat build-up and brake fade and lessen the chance of warping the rotors. Also going with better quality brake pads, like the ceramic or graphite type, will increase the life of the pads a great deal, and give you shorter stopping distances. Those upgraded types of pads are also more heat resistant than the stock type. They can also wear the rotors down quicker, since they do grab better. The question is ... are you spending the extra money for upgraded brakes if your usage level doesn't require the additional stopping power or durability?
I would also stay away from plated rotors.... only because... what happens to the rotor surface when the brake pads wear through the layer of plating?? It would seem to me that it would create an uneven surface and cause both wear and stopping problems.
Q: 2002 Toyota Tacoma 3.4L engine?
Does anyone know where a person could purchase valve lifter shims at a reasonable price? The dealership wants $12.99 each for them and the only web site I've found is about $6.60 each and doesn't list the 3.4L engine. Any help would be appreciated.
A: Try trdparts4u.com, they are a dealership based in Dallas, but they have very competitive prices and are very helpful over the phone.
Q: towing behind RV, 2002 toyota tacoma 4X4, 5 spd?
what position should transfer case and trans be in?
should I stop every 250 and drive?
Thanks Barry
A: Don't put the X-case into neutral--it'll lock it in 4 wheel drive. Tow with the transfer case in 2-hi and the transmission in neutral like a normal 2 wheel drive truck.
