Q: 1999 Ford Ranger with a bad V flex fuel engine. Would a standard Gas engine fit in this truck with no problems
I have a chance to buy a 1999 Ranger with a 'V' (flex fuel) engine which is shot. I would buy the vehicle if I thought a regular gas engine would bolt in. Does anybody know if this would be possible, and what hurdles would I have to jump... Thanx in advance for any info...

A: Yes but you will need to do all the ECM's when changing the motors. The flexx fuel motor will not run on standard ECM's and vice versa...

Q: should i buy a 1999 ford ranger?
im 17 and i have an offer for a 1999 ford ranger. The only thing is that it needs and overhaul and it needs a tune-up. Also the air-conditioner is not currently working. Should I invest the money to fix this or should i just look for a different vehicle?

A: The Ranger is and will always, be, America's #1 selling truck. They do last longer than imports. the secret: KEEP OIL IN IT! the 4cyl. has more guts than the import counterpart, the 3.0 V6 is adequate, decent mileage, the 4.0L v6 is the big engine, this motor will go 300,000+ miles without sweating an inch. There are lots of mods you can install onto this if you want. I highly recommend a Ranger, they are built more rugged than anything else. OK.. the 1999 you are describing, I would pass on it, it's obviously abused. an overhaul? a tune -up? You can't have both. an overhaul is a removal of the cylinder head, a rebuilt head and having the pistons and crank removed to have the cylinder walls machined and honed. In this case, I would simply find a truck that's been better taken care of, as it is for ANY truck. You might want to take the truck to a mechanic for an inspection. There are times a car will run horribly, but it's due to a bad sensor, or a vacuum hose that fell off. Some owners think the worst when there's really nothing wrong but something simple.

Q: What will the insurance Comp. offer me for my 1999 Ford Ranger? 80000 ODO?
I was involved in a car accident recently. The insurance company of the guy who hit me wants to write off my truck. The repairs are around $4000 as per his insurance. That is more than the truck is worth. Do I need to take what the insurance offers or can I negotiate with them? What is my truck worth? (1999 Ford Ranger 80,000 ODO good condition) Please advise.

A: If the repairs are 4 grand, and they want to take the cheaper option and total it, that means they think the fair market value is less that the cost of repairs. And indeed a 1999 Ford Ranger runs around 2 grand fair market value, well under the 4 grand to fix it. Where did you get the 8 grand figure? They will probably offer you around $1,500-$1,800.

Q: How is the 1999 ford ranger 3.0l ?

A: ONE OF THE VERY BEST

Q: I have a 1999 Ford Ranger Sport Regular cab 4 x 2 and I am trying to change the driver side seat?
The problem is I got the front two bolts out and the back two refuse to budge. I WD-40'd it to death, yanked on it with ratchet, nothing works. I broke the socket trying to move it. Its a 15mm.

A: using a impact sometimes works but sometimes it actually busts them.... Try a product called PB Blaster. We keep it in the shop for jobs like that and this and another one called acrokrawl (sp) are the only ones we found that will loosen up stuck on stuff... most stuff you buy like WD 40 are like water and are not good at breaking loose stuff.... these two are... try that and maybe get a cheap hand impact... you wack it with a hammer to act like a impact to break it loose.

Q: How do you change a fuel filter for a 1999 Ford Ranger? Is there a special tool?
I know where the filter is. I can get the clips off, but I can't get the filter loose. If there is a special tool, where can I buy one?

A: If you have got the clips loose the and removed there is a bolt probably on the top side of the retainer holding the filter in loosen this and you should be able to slide the filter out to change

Q: On a 1999 Ford Ranger what is the XLT part?
Just wondering what this means, is it "special" or just a bunch of crap that will break and cost money lol. Ok, I know XLT is an option package or trim choice. Just wondering what it entails over and above the basic truck. Specifically is it pinstripes and tint, doodads we don't need, cruise control and upgraded stereo? Specifics if you have them please.

A: XLT is an option package.

Q: How do you repair/replace a speedometer motor for a 1999 Ford Ranger? How much is part?
I've met a seller but he says the trannny is messed up due to the speedometer motor. On the first ascension through the gears,(1,2,D), he says you must manually shift with the switch on the column. After that the computer can do it until you shut off the engine. Everytime you restart the engine you must "perform this procedure." Does this even sound right???!!!!!

A: dont buy it the trans shifts thru valves from my knowlde

Q: Hard to change 1999 Ford Ranger 4X4 ball joints and rear drum brakes?
I have replaced numerous engine parts, tires, and disc brake parts but have never tried drum brakes. Are they about the same or should I just let a shop do it? I also have been told that my ball joints have a slight "knock" when the tire is pried with a digging bar (recently by a garage). They wanted $1200 to replace 4 ball joints, rear brake pads and the parking brake assy in the rear drum.. Does this sound right or should I attempt the ball joint replacement myself?

A: rear drum brakes are pretty simple ! The ebrake cable is also not too bad ! go get a book on the truck or you can go to www.alldatadiy.com and get a subscription for your truck for about the same cost of the book and print out whatever you need to do the job! Now when it comes to ball joints they aren't bad to get out there is usually a retaining clip that holds them in and you can usually hit them out with a hammer if you just hit on the ball joint!! also you could go to harbor freight if you have one near you and buy a ball joint tool for about 29.99 and it is basically just a press to get them out!! auto parts stores (some of them rent the ball joint tool and when you bring the tool back you get your money back!! If you don't want to get Into the ball joint job I would call around to other shops because the average price for all 4 joints is about 800.00 !! I'm a service manager (used to be the master mechanic for the shop until I got hurt) at Firestone and that is their going price !! if you need more help or info let me know!! Jason

Q: Where can i find a good diagram of the Brake Drums for a 1999 Ford Ranger?
I had no problem with the front calipers but once i got the back drum undone i couldn't seem to get it back together right. Anyone know where to find a good diagram? While i do have the other side to look at i dont want to get to far and then not get that side back together. I was hoping for an exploded diagram. I can seem to find one on google.

A: If you haven't already taken the drum on the other side apart, there's your "diagram". :) If not, you could probably do a Google search with the following keywords: ranger "drum brake" diagram

Q: Will the rear leaf springs from a 2003 ford ranger edge fit on a 1999 ford ranger?
Well I really don't want to but have not much of a choice. The guy i bought the truck from took them out to lower the back end and lost them or threw them away. I can't find any 99's and i found these at a junk yard on the edge. I am going to raise it a little i already have the blocks. They are GREAT! Thanks for your help!

A: Technically, YES, but why would you want to do that? Are you trying to lift the truck? Suspension parts are made specifically for certain trucks, so while it will give you more height, you are going to get a harsher ride because of the arch of the spring being more drastic. If you are just trying to lift the back of the truck, then use blocks (the same ones Mini Truckers use to lower their ride). Not only will it raise the truck whatever height you want (1", 2", 3", etc.) but you will keep the geometry of the suspension the same (only the driveshaft angle will change, and I wouldn't go over 3"). You will be doing the exact same thing as putting on Edge springs (they also will change your driveshaft angle), but keep your ride quality. I have 3" blocks on my 2000 Ranger 2WD, along with 3" raised spindles in the front, and my ride quality was exactly the same (until I put on larger tires) because I didn't change any of the suspension geometry. Also, blocks are much cheaper. You can get a 2"-3" block for around $30 bucks (that's why Mini Truckers use them).
